Summer break is here. Hard to believe that it all started last September! And yeesh, quarter systems are rough!

Finally got some free time now. I'm going to vegetate a few days to let my poor brain recuperate, but then I have exciting plans for this summer!

Meanwhile, in other news, have you seen the trailer(s) for The Martian?

Looks freaking AMAZING as a hard-scifi film. I should certainly hope so, it's based off the book The Martian by Andy Weir, which has received rave reviews by fans of "hard" science fiction and even glowing praise by a few NASA physicists. I had  *just*  started hearing about the book, and then BAM the movie trailers hit. Think Apollo 13 meets Cast Away, and this pretty well sums up the plot.
ALL OF MY HYPE!
:iconexcitedlaplz:

Yes, that's Matt Damon. Yes, he's stranded on an alien planet again. No, this is not a prequel to Interstellar. :XD:

Ridley Scott, PLEEEEEASE don't screw this up!

If nothing else, I'm grabbing the paperback the first chance I get. Movie comes out in October, so I'll have plenty of time to read the book first.

Here's a neat promo set aboard the Ares III spacecraft Hermes. It's very much like a live video feed from the ISS or Space Shuttle, but set in the work of The Martian. I think it's pretty cool! :D

What do you think? Any fans of hard-scifi out there? :la:

Finally got around to watching that trailer.  All of my hype, too!  That looks like the sort of thing we'd have set aside a day to watch back in either of my high schools, and the whole idea of localized terraforming of Martian soil and atmosphere for moderate-term habitation was something I desperately wished I could do as a science fair project (not that I had any idea where to begin, though my preliminary research showed that - unsurprisingly - NASA had been working on the same idea for a lot longer).  This already looks like an excellent premise, and ironically I kind of felt that the problems with the rescue effort, however realistic, kind of detracted from the castaway's efforts.  Though once he reached sustainability, there's only so much that can be done short of sending endless dust storms and debris impacts at him, and watching a four-year "and now I eat breakfast" vlog isn't the most gripping cinema ever produced.  Well, maybe for the first day or six - this is Mars it's happening on - but you get the point.
